What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid, commonly known as DEF, is a vital component in modern diesel engines that helps reduce harmful emissions and meet stringent environmental standards. DEF is a non-toxic, colorless, and odorless solution comprised of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. It is injected into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to convert harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapor, reducing air pollution and enhancing the sustainability of diesel-powered vehicles.

Why is DEF Important?

DEF is important for diesel vehicles to run efficiently and abide by US EPA laws.  Beginning in 2010, cars and trucks sold with diesel engines in the United States must meet new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emissions requirements.

The fluid, for cars and trucks typically a solution of urea and water, is injected into the diesel exhaust stream, and the heat from the exhaust, the fluid, and the catalyst convert the NOx into the harmless gases.
