With summer right around the corner, it’s time to take boats back out on the water. No matter if you plan to fish, water ski, or just cruise down the river, it’s a good time to refresh on what to use in your boat fuel tanks.
It’s important to only power your boat fuel tanks with non-ethanol gasoline. The ethanol in traditional unleaded gas, also known as ULSD, can harm the rubber sealings that keep your boat’s engine waterproof. If you use ethanol gasoline instead of non-ethanol gasoline, you risk exposing your boat to water damage. So, be sure to fuel up with ethanol-free gas.
The two main ways to fuel a boat are at the dock or at a gas station. Both fill-up locations present different considerations. When fueling at a dock, the most important thing to focus on is preventing fuel spills. Marine wildlife and ecosystems are easily susceptible to chemicals, like fuel, polluting their habitat. Fueling up when there are smooth waters and nice weather can help prevent accidents. Don’t forget to clean any fuel that may spill on your boat during this process.
Hitching your boat to a trailer to fuel up at a gas station lowers the risk of unexpected boat movements like those you might experience on the water. This can help lower the frequency of spills. It is as simple as pulling up to a gas station and filling the engine there. Before you fuel up, make sure the boat is level in the trailer to prevent spills and ensure that you fuel up fully. You don’t want to haul your boat to the station and back only to realize you didn’t fill up. It may be convenient to also stock-up on portable fuel containers before going out on the water in case you unexpectedly run through your tank. No one wants to be stuck with no fuel!
